KARACHI: Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) and police jointly carried out an action in the Manghopir area and arrested a man allegedly involved in the recent killing of assistant sub-inspector Akram Khan in Gulshan-i-Bihar area of Orangi Town, said a police spokesperson.
The suspect was arrested on the basis of CCTV footage of the incident in which he (the alleged killer) was seen opening fire on the police officer. Another police officer survived the assassination attempt.
The spokesperson said that acting on a tip-off, the paramilitary force and the police jointly conducted an action near Ijtimah Gah in Manghopir and arrested the suspect, Mohammed Asif, alias Bhayya, and seized weapons from him.
The suspect had gunned down the police officer at a restaurant on Aug 28. The martyred officer was performing his duty in the investigation wing of the Manghopir police.
During interrogation, the suspect “confessed” to having killed the police officer. The held suspect and his absconding accomplice, Mohammed Shaheen, alias Bihari, had been arrested in the past several times.
“They are habitual criminals and there were several cases registered against them at different police stations,” said the spokesperson.
Concerted efforts were under way to arrest Asif’s accomplice, Shaheen. The held suspect with the seized weapon was handed over to the police for further legal action.
