KOHAT: The police arrested a gang of Afghans for killing a resident of Ghulam Banda refugee camp and wounding two others with daggers here on Friday.

SHO Bilitang Irfan Khan said Laal Marjan, Yaseen, Jabir, Asif and Syed Marjan murdered Abdul Wakil and injured Wali Khan and Majid over a petty dispute. He said the accused were held during snap checking. A case was filed against them.

Separately, the police on Friday arrested a man and recovered seven electric batteries worth Rs140,000, six costly mobiles, a cycle, cash, and other items he had stolen from shops and houses.

The Bilitang police officials said during a crackdown on criminals, the police apprehended the thief, Mohammadullah of Behzadi Chakar, Kohat.

In a similar development, the police arrested a man and recovered an arms cache and drugs during a raid on a hideout in the mountainous of Nasrat Khel on Friday.

The raid was led by SHO Hamayun Khan. The arrested smuggler was identified as Mohsin Mehmood.

District police officer Mr Sohail said the seizure included rockets, a hand grenade, 11 pistols, a Kalashnikov, a kalakov and 12kg hashish.

WORK ON ROADS INAUGURATED: Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl MPA Major retired Shahdad Khan on Friday inaugurated rehabilitation work on two road projects in his PK-81 constituency.

Speaking at a function on the occasion, he said funds had been provided by the provincial government for overhauling the Tor Chappri-Charghari and Fateh Khan Khel roads. He also promised reconstruction of Shahpur road.

Also in the day, the petroleum association of Kohat sought passage of oil tankers through the Friendship Tunnel after 6pm to overcome the regular shortages of gasoline in the region.

Omair Paracha, the association’s president, said due to the closure of the tunnel at 6pm, oil tankers were stranded in Darra Adamkhel till 6am.

He said after reopening of Kohat depot, which was closed in 2007 over security reasons, there would be no shortage of petroleum products in the district.

He said principal secretary to the prime minister, Mr Tabish, had assured of making the depot operational by December this year.
