Robber shot dead, policeman wounded in encounter

Encounter

A suspected robber was shot dead while a policeman injured during an encounter on the Lyari Expressway.

Shershah SHO Chaudhry Shahid said that a citizen, Khursheed, was travelling in his car late on Wednesday night. When he slowed down near the toll point at New Chaman on Lyari Expressway due to traffic rush, two suspects came from both sides of the car.

They snatched a wallet containing Rs20,000, documents and a mobile phone. As they were fleeing after the raid, policemen patrolling on a motorbike arrived there. On information by the robbery victim, the policeman chased the fleeing suspects.

During an exchange of fire, police constable Mohammed Abbas, 46, suffered a bullet wound in his right leg while an unidentified suspect was gunned down. The dead and the injured were taken to Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital.

Six traffickers held, drugs seized

Police and Rangers on Thursday claimed to have arrested six suspected drug dealers in separate incidents and seized a huge quantity of drugs from their custody.

“The Malir police busted a gang of interprovincial drug traffickers bringing highly valued opiates for supplying in parts of Karachi,” said SSP Irfan Bahadur.

The police received credible information about the smuggling of large quantities of opiates/charas by “long-wanted drug traffickers of a major interprovincial network”.

The narcotics consignment was being smuggled from Thatta to Karachi.

“The police intercepted a rickshaw carrying sacks of 200kg high-quality charas near Ghaggar Phatak. The entire plan was to move the consignment in a nondescript vehicle to fend off any suspicion.”

However, the police seized the narcotics before they could be supplied to the drug networks in the metropolis.

“Three long-sought-after drug traffickers namely Aurangzeb Pathan, Fida Afridi, alias Langra, and Abdullah Afridi were rounded up in the operation.”

Separately, Rangers and police jointly carried out an intelligence-based action in Shirin Jinnah Colony and detained three peddlers –– Sadiq Husain, Rajab Husain and Mohammed Asif –– and seized 107kg of hashish from their custody. The estimated value of the drugs in the international market was Rs10 million, said a spokesperson for the paramilitary force.

‘Two suspects involved in Rs10m robbery held’

Two suspects allegedly involved in a robbery of Rs10m in Bahadurabad were arrested on Thursday, said East SSP Sajid Amir Sadozai.

The police also claimed to have seized over Rs2.3m and a gun from them.

They had robbed the cash from a citizen who had drawn the money from a bank in Bahadurabad on June 7.
