KARACHI: Seven suspected criminals were shot dead in alleged police encounters in the city on Thursday.

According to officials at the Taimuria police station, a team of the Shaheen Force signaled two riders of a motorcycle to stop for checking near the DC Office in North Nazimabad, but they opened fire and tried to speed away. They were chased along the road running parallel to the DC office, the police said, adding that in the ensuing encounter, both the suspects were shot dead.

They also claimed to have seized two pistols from them. The motorcycle they were riding was also taken into custody, they said.

The bodies were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where the process of their identification was underway. The Korangi police also claimed to have shot dead two suspected criminals in an ‘encounter’.

A police spokesman said that two armed robbers were looting a shopkeeper in Sector-51-B within the limits of the Zaman Town police station. Shaheen Force personnel rushed to the spot upon receiving the information. The suspects opened fire on the personnel, who returned the fire, the spokesman said, adding that both the suspects were gunned down on the spot. Two 30-bore pistols and a motorcycle were seized from their custody, he said.

The bodies were shifted to the JPMC where they were identified as Mohammed Kashif and Mohammed Asif. The suspects had a past criminal record as there were multiple FIRs registered against them. They pertained to police encounter, murder, robbery, narcotics trade and other crimes, said the spokesman.

Another “encounter” took place in Shah Faisal Colony No,5, where one suspect was shot dead near the area’s Imambargah. A police constable, Abdul Rehman also suffered a bullet wound on his foot. The suspect was identified as Osama, 25.
