PESHAWAR: The elementary and secondary education department on Sunday decided to close primary and middle schools in the summer zones of the province due to hot weather conditions.

Officials told Dawn here that students of the high and higher secondary classes in the summer zones had been told to come to schools for three hours from 7am to 10am. However, they said all the educational institutions in the winter zones would remain open as per the routine.

The officials said that date of reopening the schools would not be mentioned in the official notifications as no one knew till what time the hot weather would continue.

The educational institutions started opening in late May after having closed down due to the second Covid-19 wave. The schools were opened in phases keeping in view the positivity rate of coronavirus.

An official of the education department told Dawn that classes from 9th to 12th grades had resumed across the province, while classes from nursery to 8th grade had started in 30 districts of the province.
