THIS is with reference to the letters ‘Electric vehicles may not be good’ (April 5) opposing the idea of having electric vehicles in Pakistan. Several hundred years ago, Charles Darwin said that in this universe, those who will survive will not be the strongest or those with high intelligent quotient (IQ). Those who will survive, according to him, would be the one willing to change and adapt.

Norway is the first country in the world to have more than 50 per cent cars registered recently which are full-scale electric; not hybrid. This is the time to change and survive. In Pakistan, majority of people opposing electric vehicles happen to be those who are involved in importing used assembly line of vehicles from abroad; from countries that are progressive enough to gradually move towards the change.

The argument about shortage of electricity in Pakistan is nothing but a lame and concocted excuse. Pakistan is a resource-rich country having enormous resources of clean energy. Sunlight, wind and hydroelectric power are all gifts from Mother Nature. The only thing missing is sincerity, honesty and long-term planning.

Corrupt independent power producers (IPP) contracts and the rental power plant ships from abroad were makeshift arrangements without any love for Pakistan. We do not have to invent the wheel. We have to learn to change for the better.
