KARACHI, Oct 17: Another nine survivors of the October 8 earthquake in Azad Kashmir and the NWFP, including five women, were brought to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and the Civil Hospital Karachi for treatment of injuries on Monday.

A senior doctor said that after getting the news that victims were being attended and admitted to Karachi hospitals, relatives and friends of the quake-hit had initiated at their own and started bringing patients to Karachi.

According to the deputy director of the JPMC, Dr Seemin Jamali, Mohammad Jan, 50, was brought to the hospital by his neighbours from Tharian district. He had gangrene in the right hand and needed special attention, but did not stay at the hospital as he wanted to search his children in the place of quake. On his insistence he was allowed to leave after necessary medication.

Shanzey, 12, from Bagh, Azad Kashmir, was admitted in the orthopaedic ward with fracture femur, while a 90-year-old Sakhawat Khan with fracture femur and tibia fibula from Batagram was also admitted on Monday.

Another survivor Gulfam was discharged after initial treatment the same day. Raheeda, 50, and Rasta Bibi, 70, both with leg fractures from Bagh were admitted on Monday.

Dr Kaleem But, the medical superintendent of the Civil Hospital Karachi, said that three patients, including two pregnant women were brought to the hospital on Monday.

Ghulam Nabi, 50, from Balakot was admitted in the orthopaedic wards 1, while Tabassum, 27, and Fauzia, 35, both from Balakot and expectant mothers, who had got superficial injuries, after seeking advised from the doctors concerned were discharged from as their attendants and relatives wanted to keep the patients with them in Karachi, said Dr Butt.
