KARACHI: Adviser to Sindh Chief Minister on Law, Environment and Coastal Development Barrister Murtaza Wahab has said that solar energy is being used all over the world and Pakistan’s geographical location is very suitable for the purpose.

He said this while addressing the inaugural ceremony of 30 kilowatts Solar Energy Unit at Karachi University, said a statement on Wednesday.

He said that the KU administration had increased its own resources and was running new projects under public-private partnership.

He said that he was grateful to the KU alumni who were still cooperating with Karachi and the university.

“We should expand this revolutionary clean and green project given by the alumni to the university.”

Barrister Wahab also handed over scholarship cheques to two students in connection with the scholarships sponsored by him.

Flower show at KU

Acting KU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi on Wednesday inaugurated the three-day flower show at the KU Centre for Plant Conservation-Botanical Garden.

The flower show would remain open for the general public till March 12.

A large number of floral and fruit plants have been put on display on the centre’s green landscape situated over a hilly area.

A large number of students, deans of various faculties, and chairpersons of several departments, faculty, including members of the Confucius Institute, attended the inaugural ceremony.

‘We need to build dams’

Former KU VC Professor Dr Mohammad Qaiser informed the audience that in the next five years, there would be a severe water shortage in Pakistan while on the other hand, “we are already facing severe difficulties due to the rapidly growing population”.

He said that the KU Botanical Garden was established with the objective of raising awareness among the general public about the importance of plants and forests.

“One of the major causes of climate change is rapid deforestation for which we are all responsible. We need to build dams as well as promote plantation of native plants on a priority basis that is compatible with our ecosystem which will not only reduce the temperature but also increase rainfall.”

Dr Iraqi said that increasing pollution and air density in modern times have harmed human life.

“There is a need to create awareness among the people about the protection of trees and plants.”

Exhibiting flowers in the natural environment is an important need of the hour for the establishment of a healthy society, he added.
