The incident took place outside National University of Modern Languages (Numl) shortly after evening classes were concluded.

An officer told Dawn on condition of anonymity that according to security guards of the university, a group of students had been waiting for their rivals outside its premises and attacked them as soon as they came outside.

They engaged in physical fight and pelted stones at each other, he said, adding one of the students was stabbed with a knife.

A police contingent including Anti-Riot Unit (ARU), along with senior officers reached the university. The injured were shifted to the hospital where the student who was stabbed was pronounced dead.

Dozens of students also gathered at Pims and as a result, police contingent, including two ARUs along with senior officers, including SP Sadar Hamza Hamayun also reached the spot to maintain law and order.

The condition of one of the injured is stable, police said, adding medical assistance is being given to the others.

Details of the students involved in the attack are being collected so they could be traced and arrested.
