MANSEHRA: Adviser to the chief minister on population welfare, Ahmed Hussain Shah, said on Sunday that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government was giving due importance to education sector to put the province on the path of real progress and development.

“The corruption committed by successive governments in past affected the education sector too and as a result we couldn’t attain the prosperity, but our government is committed to putting this province on the way to real development through promoting science and technology education,” Mr Shah told the 16th parents day function of Pakistan Scouts Cadet College, Batrasi, here.

President Arif Alvi was scheduled to attend the function as chief guest, but he couldn’t because of the inclement weather.

The adviser announced Rs5 million for the college on behalf of Chief Minister Mahmood Khan and said that the KP government had approved four colleges for the district alone since coming into power.

“The cadets who passed out from here have been serving on important positions in the armed forces and other fields and you should follow the suit to serve this country,” said Mr Shah.

PSCC principal retired Brig Abdul Hafeez told the gathering that over 850 scout cadets from the country and abroad were being equipped with modern education.

“We have over 250 children of expatriate Pakistanis settled in various parts of the world and grooming them in a way that they could meet challenges of the contemporary era in various fields,” he said.

The cadets presented their skills in tent pegging, horse show, gymnastics, taekwondo and physical drills.

BOY KILLED: A young boy was killed while another sustained injuries after they were buried alive under a heavy landslide in Dehri area here on Sunday.

A Rescue 1122 team and local people retrieved both of them from the mass of landslide. The injured were taken to King Abdullah Teaching Hospital where doctors pronounced Asghar Ghani, 8, dead and referred his friend Mehmood Umar, 15, to Ayub Medical Complex Hospital, Abbottabad. The city police lodged an FIR and have started investigation.
