ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has clarified that a lower rate of Rs1,000 will be charged from individuals (salaried and non-salaried) on late filing of income tax returns for the tax year 2020 for inclusion in the Active Taxpayers’ List (ATL).
The FBR’s spokesperson has clarified that surcharge for inclusion in ATL for late filing individuals is Rs1,000 and not Rs10,000. This mistake occurred because of an error in a press release issued on Feb 24, he added.
Companies will have to pay a surcharge of Rs20,000 and association of persons Rs10,000 for inclusion in ATL, which will be published on March 1.

The govt. is not leaving any stone unturned in extracting money from tax payers.
Instead of bringing more people in tax net, the govt. is using its arms FBR and would like to extract more money from people who are already paying heavy taxes and have now further decided to penalise tax payers from Rs 1,000 to Rs 20,000 when people are unable to meet their end needs
Needless to point out that tax payers paying indirect taxes are not considered as if they are paying any taxes to the govt. at all

Till the end of Ayub regime in late 60's, those who paid their dues of services before due date, were give some handsome discounts. That prompted people to earn the discounts by hurrying to pay. But now, that has been reversed to an obnoxious trend of hefty surcharge, which is deliberately compounded with a short payment time, to extract illegal extra money from the public. This is a clear case of cruel fleecing of public by the government.
