Lawyers and law

Published February 4, 2021

THE lawyers in Pakistan are often seen disrespecting the rule of law, yet whenever an attempt is made to hold them accountable for their wrongdoing, the entire legal community comes forward in unison to protect fellow companions.

Recently, jubilant lawyers were seen firing small arms and automatic weapons indiscriminately to celebrate their victory in the district courts bar association elections in Faisalabad. One was simply dumbfounded to see such an unlawful behaviour of the lawyers.

This lawlessness needs to end; otherwise, our coming generations will suffer in silence due to such high-handed nonsense.

LAW safeguards societies from anarchy, and lawyers safeguard the law by advocating civil values. The recent bar elections tarnished the image of both the law and the legal fraternity. As soon as the election results were announced, some lawyers went berserk and resorted to firing gunshots in the air. It was an abject mockery of the law. Bar associations, law colleges and superior leadership of judiciary must come forward and denounce such acts.

Guns do not go hand in hand with garlands and amulets. We, as a society, must strive to be better.
