LAHORE: The fourth annual sports gala of intermediate students of Government College University (GCU) began on Monday at the varsity’s Oval Ground.

GCU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Asghar Zaidi and Punjab Olympics Association President Aamir Jan inaugurated the gala, which was also attended by senior faculty members and intermediate students.

Mr Jan, also the energy secretary, pledged that the association would provide training and scholarships to the outstanding sportspersons of GCU. He said sports competitions always proved to be a source of health and excitement for students and there was a responsibility towards providing them the incentives.

Prof Zaidi said the university students had started winning laurels in national games after their sports admissions strictly on merit.

He said sports and co-curricular feats were as important as academic achievements for the overall grooming and personality development of students, so they should be widely promoted to curb the inclination of the youth towards negative and unhealthy activities.

He said eight games, including football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis and tug of war were part of the intermediate games this year.

Later, tug-of-war contests were held on the first day of the sports gala.

OLD RAVIANS ELECTION: An electoral alliance was formed between two major groups for the Old Ravians Union elections.

The Ravian Galaxy and Ravian Saga groups have jointly fielded candidates after successfully negotiating seat adjustment.

Both the groups vowed to work for the betterment of their alma mater. Their candidates said they will work hard to provide facilities to the old students fraternity.

The polling will be held on Feb 14 at GCU.
