KARACHI: Favourite horse Thomas stormed to exciting three-quarter-of-a-length victory to lift the Pacific Cup in the winter Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

The victory for Thomas came after favourites were upset in the opening two races.

Thomas, who was placed second in the last outing, atoned for those losses by getting the better of Recovery to bring smile on the faces of racegoers.

The victorious horse that belonged to the stables of Fasihuddin Ghouri and Islamuddin Shaikh, was set out by trainer Hanif and ridden home by senior rider Zaki Zakir.

New Class edged Soldier Girl by neck in a photo-finish to attain third place

Another favourite Piyara Faisal stretched his winning run by galloping to a length victory over Albania in the feature event.

The small day’s card saw two favourites and as many rank outsiders sharing the honours.

At the outset, mare Gypsy Queen created quite a stir by defeating Non Stop by 3½ lengths as favourite Shabnam failed to finish on the board.

Bay horse Black Smoke pulled of the second upset after imposing to a two-length victory over Golra Pride. Favourite Take Over was not on job.

Rider Waheed Baran excelled by piloting home a brace of winners — Gypsy Queen and Piyara Faisal.
