KARACHI: A young shopkeeper was shot dead by robbers on resistance in Gulistan-i-Jauhar on Saturday, police said.

They added that Atif Ali, 25, was shot and killed by suspects during a robbery in Block 16-A, Gulistan-i-Jauhar.

Sharea Faisal SHO Iftikhar Ahmed said two suspects riding a motorbike arrived at the superstore. They snatched the cash kept at the counter. As cashier Ali put up resistance, the robbers opened fire on him and fled with the looted money. He suffered critical bullet wounds in his abdomen and was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where doctors pronounced him as dead.

Man gunned down

A 45-year-old man was shot dead in the Sukkan area on Saturday.

Police said that Gulbahar was killed by the firing of suspects near Awami Kanta, Bhains Colony Road No 8.

Woman throws infant girl, jumps from fourth-floor balcony

Area SHO Rana Maqsood said that initially the police received information that he was shot dead by robbers on resistance. But later on it transpired that the victim had recently married a second wife, which was stated to be the bone of contention among the relatives. The officer said that the father of the deceased took away the body from the JPMC without allowing doctors to conduct his autopsy. Besides, the father also gave an application to the police that he did not want any legal proceedings. The police were investigating the case from different aspects, said Mr Maqsood.

The victim was a broker in the locality.

Man killed, three injured in cylinder explosion

A man died while three other family members suffered injuries in a cylinder explosion in the Bhitaiabad area of Gulistan-i-Jauhar on Saturday, according to police and hospital officials.

Sachal police SHO Haroon Korai said the cylinder blast took place inside the home, causing injuries to the four family members. They were taken to the JPMC, where doctors pronounced Deen Mohammed, 53, as dead on arrival, said Dr Seemin Jamali, executive director of the hospital.

Three patients — Gulshan Bibi, 50, Ayesha, 22, and Jan Mohammed, 50 — were admitted for treatment.

Woman with infant daughter attempts suicide

A woman with a minor daughter attempted suicide in Gulshan-i-Iqbal on Saturday, police said.

They added that Maryam, 30, said to be a drug addict, jumped from the fourth floor in Block-13 with her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, but area people saved the infant’s life while her mother suffered minor injuries. She was taken to the JPMC for treatment.

Dr Seemin Jamali said the woman was not seriously injured and she had some psychiatric disorder.

According to Gulshan SP Maroof Usman, the woman had recently married a second time. She has been addicted to ice and the family had locked her inside a room to get rid of her addiction.

He said that initially Maryam threw her mobile phone to the ground owing to which area people gathered there. Later she threw her infant girl who was saved by the people on the ground. When Maryam jumped from the balcony, she suffered minor injuries in the legs.
