Published October 5, 2005

KARACHI, Oct 4: The Karachi Port Trust and the Karwan-i-Hayat Psychiatric Care and Rehabilitation Centre observed Mental Health Day. A variety of programmes were held in which patients and their family members participated actively. A stage play was performed by patients on the theme of “Various Methods of Treatment”. It was concluded that the best option of treatment was bio-psycho-social approach.

Participants were given gifts by Dr Zafar Qureshi.

In his presentation on suicide and its prevention, Dr Ajmal Kazmi said more than one million people committed suicide every year, ten per cent of them being from the sub-continent. To prevent serious abnormal behaviour, extended family system should be encouraged and feeling of alienation of the underprivileged communities should be done away with.—PPI
