GUWAHATI, Oct 1: Security forces enforced an indefinite curfew in two restive towns in northeastern India on Saturday, a day after police firing killed 12 stone-throwing students protesting a government decision to shift a state education board to an area dominated by a different tribe.
Schools, shops and businesses were closed in Tura and Williamnagar districts in Meghalaya state, where authorities ordered an inquiry into the police firing, state Home Minister Mukul Sangma said.
No fresh violence took place on Saturday. Mr Sangma said he was trying to set up peace committees of local residents to defuse tension in the region. —AP
