KARACHI: Six policemen were arrested for killing a man and wounding two others in a Korangi neighbourhood after a police probe found them responsible for Tuesday’s deadly incident, officials said on Wednesday.

Initially, the police had claimed that Attaullah was killed and Khizar and Shahzad were wounded in an exchange of gunfire between the law enforcers and robbers in Mehran Town.

However, it later emerged that the dead and injured were in fact robbery victims after which senior police officials ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Landhi SP Shahnawaz Chachar, who conducted the inquiry into the incident, told Dawn that the initial probe revealed that six policemen were responsible for the “regrettable” incident.

A manslaughter case has been registered against the held cops

Sharing gist of the inquiry, he said police Madadgar-15 received information about a robbery. The police rushed to the spot but by the time they arrived the robbers had already fled.

When the police reached the scene, they saw some people collecting valuables from bushes. Assuming them to be robbers, the police opened fire and the bullets hit three persons.

The victims’ relatives told the police that they had thrown their valuables in bushes to save them from robbers. They were retrieving them when the police reached the scene.

A manslaughter case was registered against the six held policemen and investigators took their weapons into custody for investigations.

Shopkeeper hurt as robber kills accomplice

A robber was killed by his own accomplice who also wounded a shopkeeper during a robbery in Korangi Industrial Area on Wednesday.

Police said two robbers tried to loot the owner of a milk shop in PNT Colony. As shopkeeper Zafar Iqbal, 35, put up resistance, the suspects shot him.

Area SHO Mohammed Nawaz Gondal said one of the robbers was also found shot dead and it appeared that his accomplice killed him. He said that the deceased was identified as Imran Gulzar.

The dead suspect and injured shopkeeper were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

The police claimed that the suspect had a criminal record as he was arrested and sent to jail in the recent past for his alleged involvement in street crimes.

Efforts were under way to arrest his accomplice, they added.
