KARACHI, Sept 25: Residents of Lyari Town have expressed resentment over persisting water shortage problem and in several areas the shortage has aggravated to the extent of crisis. Among the worst-hit areas are Baghdadi, Daryabad, Nawabad and parts of Shah Beg Lane where the crisis prevails for quite a long time.

In most of the affected localities, the situation has forced people to buy water from private tankers operators at an exorbitant rate.

Residents of the Shah Beg Lane union council, perturbed over the intermittent emergence of the acute water shortage over a decade now, lamented that despite repeated assurances by the officials concerned, no improvement had so far been witnessed in the supply position.

The situation in Ali Mohammad Mohalla and some parts of Juna Masjid locality also appeared to be the same. Local residents pointed out that although some measures had been taken to overcome the crisis, the localities were getting water in a quantity absolutely insufficient to cater to their day to day needs.

People living in other affected localities, including those falling around Fida Hussain Sheikha Road in UC Baghdadi, are very upset and have warned that youth of the area might lose patience which could ultimately lead to violence. More than 500 households in these localities have been facing an acute shortage of water for the past two weeks.

Complaints of water shortage have also been received from certain localities of Daryabad and Nawabad where street protests had been held against the concerned authorities’ failure in taking remedial measures.
