HARIPUR: A police constable was shot dead here on Tuesday by unknown attackers, police and family sources said.

Beer police quoted Rashid Pervez, a resident of Soha village, as saying that his younger brother, Abdul Basit, serving as instructor in the Hangu police training centre, had been on leave for the last few days.

On Tuesday morning, he was on the rooftop of his house when they heard gunshots and rushed to the rooftop and found Basit critically injured, the complainant said.

The injured cop was shifted to the Haripur Trauma Centre, where he succumbed to wounds suffered in the head.

Meanwhile, family members of the deceased thrashed the hospital staff over delayed response when the injured was brought there. Later, they forcibly took the body home without postmortem.

However, the police intervened and shifted the body back to the trauma centre where the autopsy of the body was carried out.

The police said they were investigating whether it was suicide or murder.
