ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Pervaiz Rashid has said that “media should be allowed to be independent in all circumstances” in the country.

While expressing concern over the recent abduction of journalist Matiullah Jan, the PML-N senator said that those responsible for the security of Islamabad should be called before the Senate Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting to explain the reasons of their failure to protect citizens.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Mr Rashid said that Mr Jan should also be invited to a meeting of the committee so that he could present his point of view.

The PML-N senator, however, clarified that during the meeting of the Senate committee on July 24 he had not talked about the confession statement of Mr Jan in official custody as reported by Dawn.

In fact, Mr Rashid said he had raised objection over the enforced disappearance and torture during custody.
