KARACHI, Sept 11: The women wing of Pakistan People’s Party, Sindh, has castigated the government’s ‘corrupt plan’ chalked out to rig the local body election. The meeting, presided over by provincial chief of the women wing MNA Ruqayya Khanum Soomro, was held at the People’s Secretariat on Saturday.

She told the meeting that the government had miserably failed in keeping its tall claim of holding free, fair and transparent election. She recalled that the PPP had predicted such practices much before the polls as the rigging had been planned and resorted to well ahead of the polling.

The meeting was attended by the wing’s organizer, Shagufta Jumani (MNA), general secretary Nafeesa Raja (MNA), Nargis N.D. Khan, information secretary Shazia Marri (MPA) and other office-bearers from all over the province.

They submitted with the party’s executive body detailed reports of rigging and unfair means resorted to by PPP rivals in the recently-held LB polls.

The meeting noted that the results of UC-10, Saddar Town, Karachi had been changed overnight whereas in Gadap, Bin Qasim, Lyari and Keamari towns, the anti-government candidates managed to attain good position despite all illegal and unethical tactics adopted by their pro-government rivals. It was appreciated that candidates of Awam Dost group and its allies resisted atrocities and rigging during the entire election process and returned on 400 seats of councillors in Karachi as against 700 claimed by the Haq Parast group.

Reports submitted by PPP activists from Hyderabad spoke of 5,000 miscreants having been brought to the city from Karachi to create a law and order situation in UC-15 and 16 of Hyderabad City.

Meanwhile, MPA Shazia Marri told journalist that the regime had now risen to unprecedented heights of injustice and immorality in fulfilling its desire to grab a maximum number of seats in the local bodies.

Appreciating PPP women’s enthusiasm and courage throughout the election process, she said that PPP chairperson Ms Benazir Bhutto always encouraged women participation in politics due to which women demonstrated excellent performance this time.

Ms Marri said the opposition’s strike on Friday was a complete success, and indicated that the government had also acknowledged the strike which was only proved the opposition’s strength. People would continue to agitate as they were burdened with rising inflation, unemployment and an unconstitutional government, she said.
