United States' top infectious diseases expert, Dr Anthony Fauci, is set to warn the US Senate of "needless suffering and death" if reopening happens too quickly in the country, according to AFP.

"If we skip over the checkpoints in the guidelines to ‘Open America Again,’ then we risk the danger of multiple outbreaks throughout the country.

"This will not only result in needless suffering and death, but would actually set us back on our quest to return to normal,” he told The New York Times.

US President Donald Trump, who is desperately seeking to reboot the economy ahead of the November election, said the US was making "tremendous strides" in ramping up testing and the number of virus infections is "coming down very rapidly".

"The people want our country open," Trump added.
