A new report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has said that the coronavirus pandemic is changing global drug trade routes.
Measures taken by governments to curb the spread of the coronavirus have disrupted air travel, the report said, leading drug traffickers to look for alternatives including maritime routes.
Air travel restrictions are bound to have a particularly drastic effect on the trafficking of synthetic drugs, such as methamphetamine, according to the report while heroin, usually trafficked through land routes is also being trafficked through maritime routes as shown by seizures of opiates in the Indian Ocean.
