KARACHI, Sept 4: Pakistan led the medals’ table when three of its four boxers won golds in the finals of the Asian boxing championship in Vietnam’s Ho Chi Min City on Sunday.

According to report received here, Meharullah gave the country its first medal when he prevailed over his rival Kim Song Guk of the Democratic Republic of Korea (DPRK) in the final of the featherweight event. The SAF games gold medallist won the bout on points 35:16.

Asghar Ali Shah became the light welter-weight champion by overcoming Nurgozhizhenis of Kazakhstan on points 37:26 to give the second gold to the country. Shaukat Ali grabbed the third gold when he won the battle in final of heavyweight category. He outclassed Uzbek Mahdi Ghorbani on points 31:16.

Noman Karim was the only Pakistani boxer who lost in the final when he was thrashed by Lee Ok Sung of Korea on points 24:10 in 51kg category. However, he secured silver medal for the country. Bantam weight category boxer Joan Tipon of Philippines was declared the best boxer of the championship.

Pakistan, after winning three golds and one silver medal, was declared the champion team while second position went to Khazakhstan and Philippines came third.—PPI
