PESHAWAR, Aug 28: Chairman of National Accountability Bureau Lt-Gen Munir Hafeez has urged upon all segments of society, especially the youth, to wage a determined struggle against corruption.

“It is imperative to root out this cancerous disease if socio-economic standards are to be raised,” he said while speaking at a seminar entitled “The role of youth in combating corruption” at the University of Hazara, Mansehra, on Saturday.

“This is why the NAB has recommended that pay structures of government employees, including judges and police personnal, be revised,” he added.

Vice-chancellor of the university Prof Mohammad Daud Awan presented a resume of achievements of the campus which was a dream institution for the local people.

He said corruption was a terrible disease which had “crept into our culture”, shattering the very foundation of Pakistani society.

Lt-Gen Munir Hafeez said corruption had destroyed all the noble values and virtues which were the hallmark of a self-respecting nation. He added that the craze for amassing unearned wealth was the root cause of all evils.

He refuted the impression that NAB was working under political pressure and following the dictates of the government by saying that the institution had earned legitimacy of its establishment as apex court had endorsed it.
