LAHORE: A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on Saturday between Lahore Municipal Corporation and the Salman Sufi Foundation (SSF) to build public toilet containers across the city as part of the foundation’s ‘Saaf Bath’ initiative.

A press release stated that the MoU was signed by Metropolitan Corporation’s Chief Corporation Officer Syed Ali Abbas Bukhari and SSF Founder Salman Sufi.

The MoU follows a meeting held between Lahore Commissioner Saif Anjum and Mr Sufi last week where the commissioner agreed to provide full support and facilitation to the foundation to alleviate the problems of hygiene and sanitation for the citizens of Lahore.

The public toilet containers would be established in areas with huge pedestrian footfall such as Barkat Market, Canal Road, Lakshmi Chowk, Ferozepur Road as well as other areas.

The Saaf Bath is targeted towards pedestrians, especially women, who did not have access to clean or safe public toilets in Pakistan. As part of the pilot project, the SSF will install container toilets in Lahore and Karachi. It will simultaneously train sanitation workers and provide them with the necessary equipment to maintain the toilets.

The foundation aims at installing 100 toilet containers across Pakistan by the end of 2020 in the project’s first phase.
