QUETTA: Two infants of a family were killed and five others suffered injuries in an explosion triggered by a gas leak in the Police Lines Colony area in Quetta on Monday.
Police said the explosion was caused due to leaking gas which accumulated in the bedroom of a house belonging to police head constable Mohammad Yaqeen Khan where he was sleeping with his wife and children. Then, someone from the household tried to light a gas heater, causing the explosion.
Two boys including a newborn and his two-year-old brother died immediately and their parents along with another family member were injured, police said.
A house next door was also impacted by the blast, partially damaging the structure and injuring two people.
Police and Frontier Corps personnel shifted the bodies and the injured to Bolan Medical College Hospital and Civil Hospital.
The blast created panic and fear among residents of Police Lines Colony. “I thought the colony had been attacked [by terrorists],” said Mohammad Afzal, a resident of the area.
On Sunday, six people suffered burn injuries in two separate gas leakage blasts in Quetta.
In January, at least five people were killed and around 24 persons injured in around six gas leakage blast incidents in Quetta and Kuchlak areas.
