KARACHI: Shortage of water persists

Published August 17, 2005

KARACHI, Aug 16: Complaints of acute water shortage continued to pour in from various parts of the city for the fourth consecutive day on Tuesday. The hard-hit localities include Landhi, Korangi, parts of Malir, Saudabad, Khokarapar, Mehmoodabad, Akhtar Colony, parts of Shah Faisal Colony, Clifon’s Block 2, Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s blocks 10, 13-D and 13-D/1 and 13-D/2, Ranchore Line and Kharadar.

Residents of the affected areas complained that although the water supply position in their localities had deteriorated 10 days back, when a major power failure had occurred at major pumping stations of the KWSB, the KWSB officials had not yet been able to restore their supply.

“Whenever we contact the KWSB officials concerned, we are told that supply would be normalized in a couple of days,” a resident of Clifton’s Block 2 complained.

He added, “It is for the last four days that we are being supplied meagre quantity of water that we have no choice but to purchase private water tankers at exorbitant rates.”

Taking undue advantage of the prevailing situation, private tankers are doing a roaring business in the water-starved localities, charging between Rs500 and Rs600 per a 1,000-gallon tanker.
