KARACHI, Aug 10: Police on Tuesday arrested a gang of five alleged robbers and recovered unlicensed pistols, jewellery, saving certificates, mobile phones, foreign currency, and other valuables from their possession.

The arrested accused have been identified as Shaukat Pervez, Abdur Razzak, Jam Shareef, Jawed, and Imran.

The police said the gang members used to enter houses posing themselves as plumbers, electricians, gardeners or meter readers, and later used to deprive the inmates of their valuables after overpowering them.

Gulshan town police officer Aleem Jafri said he noticed a man outside a bungalow in Block 13/D-1 who was talking to someone on mobile. When the police questioned him, he did not give a satisfactory reply and the police picked him up for questioning. He was identified as Shaukat Pervez, who turned out to be a robber. Later, the police arrested his other accomplices.

Police have recovered five pistols, jewellery worth Rs450,000, defence saving certificates worth Rs4.7 million, foreign currency, seven mobile phone sets, 11 expensive wristwatches, and other valuables from their possession.

Police said the gang had been active for some time.

DIES: A man died and his friend was injured in ceremonial firing at a wedding reception late on Monday night in Quaidabad.

Police said that Omar Rehman and Hussain Shah suffered bullet wounds in the firing. They were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where Rehman was pronounced dead on arrival while Hussain was provided treatment.

No formal case was lodged with the police by the relatives of the dead and injured.
