KARACHI, Aug 9: Secretary-General of the Pakistan Federation Union of Journalists Mazhar Abbas said on Tuesday that employment of journalists on contract was a “hurdle” in the way of press freedom.

He criticized the ban on certain newspapers, magazines, and arrest of journalists and hawkers. He urged all sections of society to join in the campaign for press freedom. Speaking at a ‘freedom of press rally’ at the Karachi Press Club, he recalled that the International Federation Union of Journalists had declared job security a primary requirement for press freedom.

He called for putting an end to harassment of journalists and demanded release of journalists and hawkers. He also demanded the implementation of wage board award.

Karachi Press Club President Sabihuddin Ghousi said journalists abide by law and continue struggle for press freedom. The procession, which started at the KPC, passed through Saddar and ended at the mazar of the Quaid-i-Azam. — PPI
