DACCA: The Awami League President, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, said today [Nov 8] that the culprits responsible for the recent disturbances in the city should be severely dealt with.

The Awami League chief, who returned here this morning after cutting short his stay in the UK, told reporters at the airport he was sorry for what had happened here. He asked those who started the trouble to “come back to their senses”. “They do not know they are playing with fire,” the Sheikh said.

He lauded the peace efforts made by the people, including his own partymen. He was happy that the situation had returned to normal. “Our people know how to maintain peace,” he said. Sheikh Mujib demanded punishment for those responsible for creating disturbances. “I want the culprits to be punished and not the innocents,” he said. The Awami League leader shortly after his return to Dacca went out to visit the areas affected by the recent disturbances.

Meanwhile, different peace committees formed by the intellectuals, writers, lawyers and prominent citizens were keeping up their efforts to establish harmony and peace in the affected areas. Peace processions are being taken out every day under the auspices of the peace committees.
