SWABI: The district administration on Wednesday launched a campaign to cull stray dogs across the district, said officials.

They said taking cognizance of the increasing number of stray dogs in the district and the threat they posed to the local population the administration initiated the campaign.

The officials said the district administration had received a number of complaints about the increasing number of stray dogs usually found in front of butchers’ shops.

“All four tehsil municipal administrations have been involved in the campaign,” said an official. “The dogs are culled through poison.”

The people were asked to confine their pets to their houses during the stray dogs’ culling campaign.

“The campaign attains special significance in view of the fact that anti-rabies vaccine is in short supply at both the public and private hospitals,” said an official while quoting deputy commissioner Shahid Mehmood.

TMA officials said that so far 25 stray dogs had been culled in Swabi tehsil, 53 in Chota Lahor, 38 in Topi and 67 in Razaar.

The assistant commissioners and additional assistant commissioners have been tasked with monitoring the campaign and ensuring that the dead dogs are disposed of properly in far-flung areas.

TWO WITH WINE HELD: The police on Wednesday arrested two persons and recovered large quantity of wine from them.

Parmuli police station SHO Niaz Ali said they stopped a car and during checking recovered wine and arrested Mohammad Yaqoob and Ishfaq Ahmad, belonging to Peshawar. A case was registered against them.

Meanwhile, the police also recovered two kilogrammes of charas and arrested Shahidullah of Lakki Marwat and Niaz Mohammad of Razaar. A case was registered against them.
