LAHORE: A clash between two groups near Mohni Road on Thursday led to killing of a man and injuries to seven others including the SHO of the Lower Mall police station.

The two parties clashed over a disputed piece of land meant for the construction of a mosque, a police official told Dawn. He said the armed clash created panic in the area, prompting traders to shut down markets.

Heavy police deployment was made shortly after the incident and senior police officers, including the Lahore DIG Investigation, reached the spot to control the situation.

The official said both groups claimed ownership of the property near Mohni Road.

As they opened fire on each other, Lower Mall SHO Asif Idrees who was trying to engage both sides came in the line of fire and was injured. The six other people including passersby suffered injuries and were taken to hospital where Qaim Din, 55, succumbed to his injuries, said the official.
