THE consumption of steel is termed as a reliable indicator of a country’s economic and industrial development. The per capita consumption of steel in the United States is around 306kg while that of the fast-emerging world power, China is 590kg. The average per capita consumption of the world stands at around 224kg.

In comparison, Pakistan has a per capita consumption of steel of only 40kg, one of the lowest in the world. We are all aware of the alarming state of affairs that prevails at Pakistan Steel Mills.

Against this backdrop, Pakistan needs to take some serious action to mitigate the supply and demand gap in this regard. This would also help in reducing the import bill. The government should seriously think about running the PSM as a do-or-die venture. There is no reason why the steel mills’ fortunes cannot be revived. All that is needed are a few honest men with determination to accomplish the task.

NEWS reports say the government intends to hand over Pakistan Steel Mills to a consortium led by Chinese companies. It will also include some Russian companies.

If I recollect correctly, the PSM was set up with the Soviet Union’s collaboration and began operations in 1975. Therefore, Pakistan now has over 40 years of expertise to run such a giant complex. The question is why are we unable to do so ourselves? This aspect must be investigated thoroughly before taking a final decision.

In my opinion the federal government should study the Sheffield Steel Mill model to revive the PSM and run it profitably. A high-powered committee should be formed by the federal government to supervise its overall performance. I am confident sincere efforts will revive this asset of the nation.
