LAHORE, Aug 2: The Pakistan Railways has issued a list of 153 people killed in the triple-train accident at the Sarhad railway station on July 13. According to the list updated by the PR’s commercial branch of the passenger business unit for the payment of compensation, the number of those killed is 153. Earlier, the PR authorities had issued a list of 138 deceased for compensation but they could not find their complete addresses.

The revised list identifies the names of 90 victims travelling in either of the three trains which collided to cause the worst train accident in the country’s history. The railways have so far not identified another 66 passengers who, their relatives claim, have not reached home. The PR says some of them may be among the dead who could not be identified.

However, the list mentions that 63 passengers who could not be identified, were buried around the Ghotki railway station as their bodies could not be delivered to their families. The commercial branch of the railways passenger business unit has prepared the list for dispatching cheques to the families of those killed and injured in the accident.

The lists show that 71 men and 60 women passengers were killed in the accident. The gender of another 22 could not be known because their bodies were mutilated beyond identification. The list does not mention them for compensation. They were included among victims whose limbs were bundled in several sheets. Bodies of some of them could not be handed over to their relatives.

Although the commercial branch has listed 153 passengers as dead, the number of cheques for compensation issued so far is only 49. The cheques were sent to PR’s divisional authorities for distribution last week.
