The sad story of the PIA can be summed up with Boeing 737, which It leased to Emirates in 1985 to start operations. After 34 yrs PIA is still flying it, bleeding over Rs30B, while the Emirate has built one of the most modern fleets. Past success of PIA goes to legendary AM Nur Khan, the 2 time MD, & the airhostess Momi Gul Durrani, called ‘The Face of PIA’. With posting profit in 2002 -2004, PIA suffered- increasing fuel costs, inherent inefficiencies & lack of capital injection. In 2004, it leased 3 Boeing 777 & 6 Airbus 310 at cost of $1.5B. to fly to Chicago,Toronto & London. After 2006, crash, all Fokker were replaced with twin turboprop ATRs. In 2007, EU banned PIA’s B-747 & A-310, leaving PIA w/B-777s to carry 43% of the air traffic from Pakistan PIA has now gone completely to the verge of collapse w/govt. giving it support of Bns. W/a fleet of 38 planes, PIA can operate just 25. having no money to pay for spares. In 2013 Govt decided to privatize PIA, yet to be accomplished

I am a frequent flyer from the the US for the last 30 plus years but do not buy PIA ticket because of their performance.. I know many Pakistani use other airlines not because of cost of tickets but other factors are also consider when purchasing PIA ticket. I think PIA should be privatized. It is very simple like any business if company is not a profitable then some one else should take over and make it profitable. Name of the airline will remain the same but let private company run it. I am sure it will bring more revenue to the Pakistani treasury. Win Win situation for Pakistan and for the private stock holders. After all many foreign air lines are make profit from Pakistani passengers.
