LANDI KOTAL: Police in Landi Kotal on Wednesday severely beat up an elderly person and then resisted his shifting to hospital by local residents.

Sources said three police constables Aamir, Kiramat and a brother of Aamir subjected Mohammad Raza, a resident of Peerokhel, to severe physical torture in Landi Kotal Bazaar due to which the victim became unconscious.

They said that when some passers-by tried to shift the victim to hospital, the police forcibly stopped them from doing so and continued kicking the victim in his stomach.

The sources said that it was only after the policemen left the venue that the victim was shifted to hospital in critical condition where doctors said that he would be referred to Peshawar if his condition did not improve.

The Landi Kotal DSP later arrested a relative of the accused and started investigations.

Meanwhile, Akhtar Shah, an official of the jail department in Peshawar, assumed charge of Landi Kotal lockup on Tuesday.

Officials said more subordinate staff would also be deputed in Landi Kotal lockup in coming days. Akhtar Shah’s appointment is the first of its kind in a tribal district after the region’s merger with KP in May last year.
