KARACHI, July 29: Rich tributes were paid to the late Mahmood Ali Asad, senior journalist and a former president of the Karachi Press Club (KPC), at a condolence meeting here on Friday.

Senior journalists, present and former office-bearers of the KPC, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists and the All Pakistan Newspapers Employees Confederation recalled the services of the late Asad as a journalist and as a trade unionist.

They described the late Asad as a dedicated and active worker who had struggled for years for the rights of journalists. They said the late Asad had strong commitment to trade unionism.

Those who spoke included KPC president Sabihuddin Ghausi, secretary Najeeb Ahmed, Pakistan Herald Workers Union secretary Shafiuddin Ashraf, Ahfazur Rehman, Khursheed Tanweer, Sarfraz Ahmed and Tahir Najmi.

On the occasion, PFUJ secretary-general Mazhar Abbas called for setting up of a ‘journalist foundation’ to help those journalists who were facing financial problems. Senior journalist Hassan Abidi endorsed the demand. — APP
