GILGIT: A man committed suicide over police’s alleged inaction to get his 10-year-old daughter recovered from kidnappers, who abducted the girl a week ago and also subjected her to sexual abuse, family sources said on Saturday.

They told mediapersons that Najeebullah ended his life on Friday evening by jumping into the Gilgit River for not getting justice from police.

A brother of the deceased said the family was frustrated by police inaction, forcing Najeebullah to end his life.

According to local police, Najeebullah, 55, from Tangir valley of Diamer district, and currently living in Skarkoi area of Gilgit city, had recently filed an application in the city police station, stating that his 10-year-old daughter had been kidnapped by some locals.

Police officials said FIR of the kidnapping incident had been registered on request of the deceased some days ago. However, they claimed that the girl had reached the house of one of her relatives three days after her kidnapping.

The police said they had arrested three suspects, including a woman relative of the girl. They said a medical report had confirmed the girl was raped.

Meanwhile, political and social activists strongly condemned the incident and demanded strict action against the culprits.

Also, Chief Minister Hafeezur Rehman, taking notice of the incident, has ordered judicial inquiry into it. He has also ordered action against the police, according to a press release issued by the CM House on Saturday.
