Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry on Thursday announced that Pakistan will send its "first person to space" in 2022.

"Proud to announce that selection process for the first Pakistani to be sent to space shall begin from Feb 2020," he shared. "Fifty people will be shortlisted — list will then come down to 25 and in 2022, we will send our first person to space."

"This will be the biggest space event of our history," added the PTI minister.

Speaking to Dawn.com, Chaudhry said that the Air Force will be the custodian of the selection process, adding that all around the world pilots are selected for space missions. He said that initially 50 pilots will be selected, from which the list will be brought down to 25 and then 10. The federal minister said that 10 pilots will be trained and eventually one pilot will be sent to space.

Chaudhry said that there is an agreement between Pakistan and China and as the country does not have its own satellite launching facility, a Chinese facility will be used, as done previously.

Instead of using Chinese space shuttle and talking for sending first Pakistani national into space, Federal Minister of Science & Technology Fawad Chaudhry should concentrate on SUPARCO which is purely a Pakistani organisation that it should develop and make Pakistani shuttle by 2022 to send it in the space. We are already using every thing made it China in Pakistan and he is still looking towards China to use Chinese shuttle in 2022.

Why PTI not focusing to booster IT exports. Currently we are exporting $2 Billion in IT and it can easily be increase to $20 B. They need to copy Indian IT ministry laws. In India, a foreign IT company have to pay tax and this tax is being collected in separate account for 10 years. After 10 years, a company can decide whether this tax goes to Indian government OR it can expend its infrastructure from tax money in India. So most of the companies prefer to expand that is how India manage to export $100 B in IT. In Pakistan PTI appointed MQM killer leader in IT ministry, who has prior experience of killing youth in Karachi.

Our rival India is Heading to the Moon is an another motivation for Pakistan, let us peep into the history of Pakistan and India. Back in 1952 when Indian Cricket team thrashed England at Madras by an innings and eight runs to square the series, Pakistan was inspired and they started taking cricket seriously and within few years Pakistan became a far better team than India. India started nuclear program in 1967 and first tested a nuclear device in 1974 that inspired Pakistan and KRL engineer achieved this herculean task in 1984. Now India started is heading towards moon and Pakistanis are far more inspired than ever before. Time will decide how we counter India in space mission but we have done it in past and hopefully Pakistan will do better this time too. Good Luck Pakistan

@Zunaid, Absolutely, i agree with you. First of all, its useless to send human directly to the moon without having your own infrastructure. Instead first, they should create infrastructure, funds, institutes wtih proper techenology, ect... These things go step by step. As you know India worked hard since many years, initially they failed but after approximately 50 years of hard work they are standing strong in this aea. Offcourse you can send human after achieving all these steps. Taking help from any country will not achieve good results end of the day. Thanks.

While I strongly believe that despite all problems, no country should stop aiming higher and higher. However, in Pakistans case, its economy is in a very precarious condition. Unlike India, it does not have a booming economy. Pakistan should be extremely careful in its expenditure by trying to enter into some sort of a space race with India.

Yes, Pakistani economy is in trouble at present, it's not going to be like that forever. Hopefully PMIK will be able to set it on course. We have to agree he is trying his best. Pakistan has to address the space technology issue at some point, sensible thing would be systematically develop achievable programs, train the young scientists in required numbers and start developing in house technology. Sending man to space is not probably the best way to kickstart. Anyway these matters should be left to appropriate scientists in Pakistan. If Pakistan gets rid of it's ASSETS things will take turn for good.

Success through cooperation is a great way to learn and achieving discovery's for the advancement for Pakistan, it happens with the international space station, for those that are criticizing. so what if Pakistan has decided to partnered up with China to achieve this, we will still gain knowledge and in time we will have a permanent human presence in space and beyond, having your own launch vehicles is not a problem, if Pakistan wanted to have it's own launch vehicle today it can achieves this within a year by throwing money at it, we have the capability and the knowledge to do it, Space exploration is not about getting up there anymore, but what you do when your up there.

No need to go to the moon. Build good quality schools,universities, hospitals, transportation, etc. Do not waste money on superfluous projects. Pay off your debts to IMF, World bank, ADB, etc. Spend on developing research facilities in all fields. Look after the poor and needy.No need to compete with India. Work on eradicating corruption and illiteracy in the next ten years. No real need to go to the moon.

Good forward thinking by Pakistan. India had sent their first person (Rakesh Sharma) in space in 1984 on a Soviet spacecraft. It gave a big impetus to interest in science and technology in our country. All the best.

Please do not underestimate the capability of Pakistan. This joint mission would require immense training, including handling various on-board equipment such as high resolution cameras. When the Chinese astronauts enter space, they would need a capable person to take high resolution photographs. The Pakistani astronaut will get rigorous training in this.

Pakistan history of space program from Dawn (https://www.dawn.com/news/756858/space-exploration-and-pakistan-the-significance-of-space-technology) Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) - seems like Suparman Co. - 1st satellite on 16 July 1990 - BADR-1, launched from the Xichang Launch Center, China. Nobody knows what happened? - BADR-B on December 10, 2001 (no sense of versioning), designed by Space Innovations Limited from the UK, launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. Again nobody knows what happened? - Paksat 1 (Originally manufactured by Boeing) launched on Feb 1, 1996 (don't know from where?) - Paksat-1R replaced Paksat-1on August 11, 2011 (again don't know launched from where?) Total 4 sent in space with last one 8 years back. No conclusive info if Pak made anyone of them

There is nothing wrong in putting efforts, no other matters like economical, political or financial should be allowed to interfere in scientific matters. But China is a wrong partner, they will never allow Pakistan to be independent. Instead Pakistan should put effort in selecting intellectuals and try to develop their own technology here. I'm sure all Pakistani's will support the effort. China is not the way !!

I think instead of sending person to Moon in Chinese vehicle, better to start making own rockets and start launching and then keep improvising. I am sure the success of own rocket launches will inspire many young brains for more technology and scientific temper. One day sure person will go to space from the own launch pad.

Indians devised and developed Parallel Computing to bypass the need for a Supercomputer. However, Pakistan was offered assistance in solid fuel rockets even in 1961

Nobody seems to take Fawad Chaudhry seriously. However, it is plausible that Chinese may take one Pakistani pilot into space. His moon calendar application is a way forward and needs to be appreciated. He seems to be a much better minister than a number of other ministers.

When i saw the indian space craft launch after umpteen postponements, i remembered some one told me there was a American Tv serial called, ‘lost in space’. How appropriate considering first one never came back and was lost as was the mars one, now this version 2. Space junk. Pakistan has taken far better and economical route.
