Maryam Nawaz's interview 'stopped forcefully' shortly after being aired: show host

An interview of Maryam Nawaz Sharif, a vice president of the PML-N, was "forcefully" taken off air soon after it was run, it was reported on Thursday.

"Just came to know Maryam Nawaz Sharif's interview has been stopped forcefully just [a] few minutes after it started live," tweeted show host Nadeem Malik.

Hum News, the channel on which the interview was aired for a few brief moments, released a statement shortly after the incident, saying: "Hum News believes in a free and responsible media. Protecting freedom of expression is one of our core values. At the same time, we stand for the respect and dignity of [the] judiciary in line with our ethical values and the Constitution."

The development comes days after AbbTakk TV, 24 News, and Capital TV all had their broadcasts cut after screening a press conference by Maryam Nawaz.

Authorities say the three channels were unavailable due to “technical issues”, but Reporters Without Borders (RSF), a global media watchdog, described the outage as an act of “brazen censorship”.

It slammed the local authorities over the removal of three television channels from the country's airwaves, saying the move was “indicative of disturbing dictatorial tendencies” as pressure mounts on journalists in Pakistan.

Perspective: Why media censorship is problematic

Maryam is the daughter of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif — who is currently behind bars for corruption — and a recent press conference she hosted featured a judge reportedly claiming he had been blackmailed into convicting the former premier.

The move came as Prime Minister Imran Khan's administration vowed to block any media coverage and interviews of politicians “who are convicts and under trial”.

Earlier this month, Geo News TV abruptly took an interview with former president Asif Ali Zardari off air shortly after it began.

Follow the rules, guidelines and above all the law. If Maryam is a convict and the rules say a convict cannot be interviewed on air then it is what it is. The rules, guidelines and the law applies to all including journalists. Freedom only goes as far as the law allows it to go, if the freedom entangles with the law then the law prevails.

Its not Maryam. All those who are facing charges and their cases are going on in the court, they must not be allowed to come at any TV channels for interview etc. No doubt they have made fun. Really still they are enjoying in the jail and at home at our cost.They take all advantage as their right. The key point for whole Pakistan and intelligentsia to ponder whether we allow corrupts and compulsive liars to glorify themselves and mislead the public to get the votes. If not it is scandalizing the court and a breach of rules by the Hum tv and Nadeem Malik.How its truthfulness had been obtained by those who had aired and published it ?.It is not a political comment of a politician but a comment on the judge by a convicted criminal in favour of a convicted prisoner.Such things should not be allowed to be aired / published.

@Immi (UK), I am also from the UK an MP currently serving time can not stand for parliament. However that does not impede on the media's right to broadcast interviews. Serial killers and rapists have been interviewed in the west. I ask the question why were these restrictions not applied prior to Maryam Nawaz exposing the judiciary?

Govt of Pakistan must stop few TV channel immediately who are spreading panic, misinformation and disturbing masses. These channels promoting positive image of most corrupt people and families who ruled Pakistan and looted our nation's wealth.

It is not just the govt. Our whole society does not believe in talks and discourse. We are a dictatorial society. Only those who wield power can speak. And the party workers almost always support the party line, they never try to weigh in on fact. We don't tolerate those we believe to be wrong doers. We want them to speak in the silent cells where no one can hear them. Our crumbling justice system is not believable given the past record. Be open and let others defend themselves openly.

Mrs Maryam Safdar Nawaz is a convict and is on bail shouldn't be allowed to appear and give any sort of interview on the electronic media, she has been convicted on forgery so any interview of her or any word from her mouth should be shunned. She should apologies with the masses distributing false and base news so far.

Maryam is a convicted fellow and also under trial for false and forge documents submitted to court. Nadeem Iqbal should be send to jail for interviewing a convicted criminal.

Some people just don't understand that Maryam family are convicts, some are hiding in England and wanted by Pakistan for corruptions. She is trying to fool the people of Pakistan by her lies, unfortunatly there are many fools who fall into her trap, if she has proof she can go to supreme court, Shah khan abbassi was constantly asked, if you have proof of Nawaz's innocence, why don't they take to supreme court, he constantly refused to answer that question.

We have Doctors Without Borders, and Reporters Without Borders. We also have Countries Without Ethics. These countries, mostly western democracies, have no restrictions for purchasing their properties, stashing money in their banks or even purchasing a golden visa or residential rights. The only requirement is that you have the money. No questions asked how you came in possession of that money. However these countries are very sensitive about democracy, human rights and freedom of expression.

I have friends in media and their jobs are at risk. They have to do such interviews or anything else to stay in news and get rating to survive. Although, they know it is not ethical as they have to work on term and condition of these convicted people and may not ask tough questins such as Fake Accounts or Forgery fonts, etc but if they don't do it, someone else will take this interview and will save the job. This is a jack pot for them when these interviews are blocked from on air.

What is a free media. Does a convicted person in the UK give interviews. Tommy Robinson is being sent to jail for photographing court proceedings and is being tried for contempt of court.

Media needs to be accountable and responsible. It is paramount they are fair and impartial, however, number of channels are merely propaganda spouts for certain people or parties, which undermine the country both locally and internationally. Freedom of speech has to be governed by certain rules and tenets, it is not free for all.
