KARACHI: An interview of former president Asif Ali Zardari was stopped from being aired shortly after it started on a private news channel on Monday.

Hamid Mir, who was the interviewer of the programme on Geo News, took to Twitter to express his outrage over the incident. “I can only say sorry to my viewers that an interview was started and stopped on Geo New[s] I will share the details soon but it’s easy to understand who stopped it? We are not living in a free country,” he wrote.

In a series of tweets, Mr Mir said that within few minutes during the telecast Geo News announced Mr Zardari’s interview would not be aired.

“I am getting calls from all over the world people asking what happened? State of Pakistan giving bad name to this country we don’t need enemies,” he said.

In a snippet of the interview circulated on social media, the former president disclosed that an investigation into a big scandal, involving Prime Minister Imran Khan, was under way.

“What’s wrong in it? I asked some questions to ex President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari he responded? Is he bigger criminal than Ehsanullah Ehsan former spokesman of TTP? Remember Ehsanullah Ehsan gave interview from official custody I interviewed Asif Zardari in Parliament House,” asked Mr Mir.

Commenting on the matter, Pakistan Peoples Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari tweeted: “Selected government only wants to hear selected voices. President Zardari’s interview with @HamidMirPAK censored. Pulled from air when it had already started. No difference in Zias Pakistan, Musharrafs Pakistan & NayaPakistan. This is no longer the free country Quaid promised us.”

Various media watchdogs took notice of the incident and condemned press censorship in the country.

“Freedom Network slams what appears case of enforced #censorship as #interview of @AAliZardari with @HamidMirPAK is stopped minutes after it started,” the watchdog stated.

The Asia Desk of the Committee to Protect Journalists termed it an “outrageous infringement on freedom of the press!”

I request Hamid Mir not to blow things out of proportion here... convicts suspects and criminals should not be given any air time. But if he still feels his press freedom has been compromised, he should make his reservations known in private to all concerned individuals - blowing this up in front of the media to gain sympathy from Indian trolls will not do his credibility any good.

Mr. Zardari was arrested for a crime. He should be in Jail not in the Parliament House giving interviews. Production orders for all the criminals in the Parliament must be canceled. These criminals put these Clauses in the Constitution so they can stay out of Jails. Constitution must be amended to remove the production orders from the Constitution. Meantime the President of the Pakistan should use his Presidential authority and cancel Production Orders for all these criminals.

When stopped they raise hell & fury and talk about press freedom. What a convoluted & illogical way of thinking. If Ehsan or Zardari have to defend themselves, they should do so in court of law, not in public. Media / Mr. Mir should not disrepute media by facilitating public defense of those accused of crimes.

Let's be real. No prisoner in the developed world gets to be interviewed unshackled and without his prison uniform. Most are interviewed behind bars to cuffed to tables. That's how the people watching TV know that anything the criminal says is to be taken with a grain of salt, if one even chooses to take in the first place. Mr. Mir has very little journalistic ethics it seems and might not have the country's best interests at heart after all.

Freedom of speech does not warrant anybody the right to tell lies based on his or her position, color, race, ethnicity, gender, age, family background, status, association, wealth, assets and health. In fact, nowhere in the world including the U.S., pathetic criminals like Zardari and his crooked clan members are allowed to tell unsubstantiated stories on air or other media outlets. Hamid mir should be asked the question " in which western democracy do you ever see a prisoner on trial of fraud , corruption and money laundering , given prime television time to espouse his views and to make allegations against the state" ?? A request to Hamid mir, your loyalty to your country is more important than your political affiliations " please bear that in mind as you do your work.

Who are you trying to fool Mr. Mir, this NAYA Pakistan is making it difficult for a lot of people isn't it? What FREEDOM of press are we referring to here? ... where Anchors are being bought for political gains? Propaganda should be pulled off the air and whoever did this has done the right thing.

Pre-trial accused and those under trial are regularly on tv in many democratic countries.Even those tried, convicted and imprisoned are interviewed with the concurrence of the jail authorities. Depends on the public's interest in the case.Those arguing that the accused have no such rights are mistaken.

Nothing has been proven against zardari no matter what the keyboard warriors say. We need to respect the law and freedom of speech even for the convicted one. But we as a nation has lost all tolerance for even others point of view. Sorry state as a nation and PTI is surely responsible for a lot of intolerant culture. Not a single leader in the crowd who can dare ask his followers to not to use foul language, and people claim to be working to make riasat i madina!

All the TV channels must be closed which telecast the interviews and life programs of criminals, corrupts, culprits, money-launderers, mal-administrators, cronies, etc. Pakistan and Pakistanis don't need such TV channels.

Where in the world a jailed person is allowed to interview to tacitly effect the government or its institutions? There is no doubt that Hamid Mir is also against the powerful institutions, not justifying his own wish to influence the state enterprises more than any of the constituent components of the state. This shows the weak state of Pakistan.

Interview was interrupted shortly after Zardari alluded to an on-going investigation in London for financial improprieties against Imran Khan - something that has been kept out of public domain thus far. Go back, and watch the interview again.

@AAK, Prisoners can and do give interviews across the world. Especially in the US. Just look st the many documentaries and investigative programmes about old crimes where prisoners get a chance to give their view. It's called free speech and democracy. We don't have that. Yet.

Most people don't believe Zardari. Hamid is probably upset because this interview would raise his profile. The channel were possibly crafty and dramatic in the manner in which they pulled the show off air. Most of us know the track record of this channel. Why do journalists think its ok to allow mud slinging on their shows without evidence. Surely if there is evidence of any scandal it would be taken to the courts.
