Gilgit prison overcrowded

Published July 24, 2005

GILGIT, July 23: The Gilgit prison is overcrowded following a wave of arrests in the wake of violence last week. Sources said the authorities had detained all the under-trial prisoners and suspects with other criminals while raids were continuing to arrest more. Jail inmates, they said, were in a pathetic condition due to the congestion of space. The sources said officials had to turn a boys high school of the district into a sub-jail.—Correspondent
