Heatwave to worsen in coming days

LAHORE: Tuesday was a hot day in the plain areas of the country and temperatures are expected to further rise during the next three days in view of hot and dry weather.

It will remain very hot in most plain areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, east Balochistan and Sindh during the current week, said Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) in its daily report.

PMD Director General Riaz Khan told Dawn that temperatures were bound to rise further in the country during the next three days because of the hot and dry weather. A westerly wave would enter Pakistan from its extreme north side on June 1 but it was expected to give light rain merely over the Gilgit-Baltistan region.

He did not rule out the possibility of locally generated strong winds in the plain areas in the next three days.

Weather was hot in most parts of country on Tuesday, rising temperatures especially in Sindh to their highest levels of the season.

The highest temperature in the country was 48 degrees C that was recorded in Jacobabad. It was 47 in Dadu and Moenjodero, and 46 in Rahim Yar Khan, Sukkur and Larkana.

Lahore and Sargodha recorded 42 degrees C, Faisalabad 43, Multan 44, Dera Ismail Khan 43, and Turbat in Balochistan 45.

The Met department forecast very hot weather in the plain areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, north Balochistan and Sindh in the next 24 hours.
