RAWALPINDI: A man killed himself after setting his wife’s dowry on fire in Rawat on Wednesday.

The police said the deceased, identified as Mohammad Jamil, had been distressed because his wife left and returned to her parents’ home.

He had been trying to bring her back home because they had a daughter together, but was unsuccessful.

On Wednesday, Jamil went to his in-laws’ house and tried to settle the dispute with his wife.

He also warned her that if she did not return by 6pm she would be responsible for the consequences.

Police said that when the woman did not return, Jamil placed her dowry in the courtyard of the house and set it on fire. He also destroyed crockery items in the kitchen, before consuming poison.

After his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Separately, a woman attempted to hang herself at her home in Afshan Colony.

According to rescue services, the 28-year-old woman was mentally ill. She was saved and shifted to the hospital, where she is stated to be in critical condition.
