KARACHI: A motorcyclist was killed and his pillion rider wounded on Tuesday when their motorbike was hit by a fast-moving dumper near Manzil Pump on the National Highway, said an official.

He added that the two friends were identified as 45-year-old Saleem Khan and 40-year-old Hameed Khan, residents of Landhi. They were riding to the Korangi Industrial Area when they were hit by the dumper.

“The dumper driver escaped with the vehicle after the accident,” said an official at the Shah Latif Town police station. “The accident left both the riders badly injured. They were rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment, where Saleem died. The families of the victims did not allow any medico-legal formalities to be performed. They have not even approached the police for registration of any case.”

Rabies-affected boy from Shikarpur dies

Rabies caused a fifth death in Sindh this year on Tuesday when an eight-year old boy from Shikarpur district died during treatment at the Indus Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment of the lethal disease, officials said.

They said Rizwan, son of Ramazan, was brought to the health facility with symptoms of rabies. His family told doctors that the boy was not immunised despite the fact that he was bitten by a rabid dog almost a month back.

It was the fifth death caused by rabies in the province as four people have already died of the disease at different hospitals of the city. According to the World Health Organisation, rabies is a vaccine-preventable viral disease which occurs in more than 150 countries and territories and dogs are the main source of human deaths caused by rabies — up to 99 per cent of all rabies transmissions to humans.
