CHITRAL: A function was held in Bumburate valley here on Wednesday to review preparations for the Chilim Jusht spring festival of Kalash people in which the participants were enthralled by traditional Kalash dance and other feats of merrymaking.

Held under the aegis of the federal ministry of religious affairs and interfaith harmony, the event was attended by the elites and religious leaders of Kalash valleys of Bumburate, Birir and Rumbur.

Speaking on the occasion, deputy commissioner of Lower Chitral, Khurshid Alam Mehsud, said that Chilim Jusht heralded the advent of spring season. He said that the government would facilitate the Kalash people to celebrate their festival scheduled to start from May 12.

He said that the existence of Kalash people represented a positive and soft image of Pakistan all over the world. He said that interfaith harmony prevailing here was exemplary.

Mr Mehsud said that the Kalash elders were free to determine details of their festivals and practice their religious beliefs.

The DC also appreciated the federal ministry for holding the function in connection with the festival.

Responding to the reservations of Kalash elders, he assured the community that land settlement process would be finalised as per their aspirations and they would never be divested of their forests and pastures.

Earlier, deputy secretary of the ministry, Imran Rashid, highlighted the importance of Kalash culture and assured them of full support from the government for their empowerment. He said that the government had taken steps with regard to preservation of the Kalash heritage, funding for their religious activities and education.

The function concluded with prayers by the Kalash religious leaders Mir Baja and Dinuk (Birir), Sherzada (Rumbur) and Bahram Shah (Bumburate) for the prosperity and safety from natural hazards.
