PESHAWAR: Ambassador of Switzerland Thomas Kolly inaugurated Legal Aid Unit and Human Rights Focal Point at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council here on Tuesday. The Legal Aid Unit is part of Strengthening Rule of Law programme initiated by the UNDP.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony attended by representatives of the KP Bar Council, lawyers, chairman Free Legal Aid Mohammad Sareer, UNDP head of KP, the Swiss envoy said he himself was a lawyer and understood problems being faced by the litigants in seeking justice.

He said that free Legal Aid Unit was a landmark achievement and assured more cooperation in programmes related to justice sector.

A representative of UNDP said that a scholarship programme for female lawyers of the newly-merged districts was also on the cards.

Meanwhile, during a visit to Mardan district the Swiss ambassador said that more investment was coming to Pakistan after restoration of peace in the region and stressed the need for resolving all the issues through dialogue.

He also visited tourist sites in the district. He said the Swiss government would invest in tourism sector and beautification of Mardan to make the district a tourist destination.

He said that the Swiss government was the fifth biggest investor in Pakistan and vowed that the bilateral relations between the two countries would strengthen in future.
