The voice of the uncouth?

The fourth edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL), about to make its presence felt, is one of the most awaited sporting events of the year. Fans of the event were excited to hear that actor and singer Fawad Khan would be belting out the PSL 2019 anthem.

If reaction on social media is anything to go by, however, the song ‘Yeh khel deewanon ka’ and video seem not to have struck paydirt. Although it strives desperately for a catchy, foot-tapping rhythm, the pedestrian lyrics, especially in the chorus — “Chal josh dikha de tu / Aur baaja baja de tu” — are quite a letdown.

The constant repetition of the words tu and teri gives a rather uncouth touch to the tune. And uncouth is not the word that you associate with Fawad K.

Gumm in Translation

Actor Shamoon Abbasi’s rant against the film Gumm (in which he played the villain’s character) after the release of the project has reinforced the notion that there’s a lot to be done in order for our movie industry get on the right track.

To clear the air, Shamoon A chose a social media platform to let everyone know his side of the story. Dismissing claims that he was only coming out after the film had tanked, he claimed that when he had heard the script of the film, he had told the makers that it sounded like a copied idea, to which they had replied that only the opening sequence was taken from the Hollywood film he was referring to. Taking them at their word and trusting them, Shamoon signed the contract. But then he realised his trust was misplaced and things got messy during the shoot, and when the movie saw the light of day, the actor came out with a statement against its makers.

To be honest, given the reviews the film — which flopped badly at the box office — got, it seems plagiarism was not the only problem the film had. Obviously the bad blood between the star and the debutant filmmakers is between them but the spectacle — of an actor dissing his own film and the film itself — doesn’t help the image of Pakistan’s newly resurgent film scene. About time some professionalism was injected into it.

House Arrest

Ranveer Singh has, so far, proved to be a loving and caring husband. What man, in this day and age, especially in the subcontinent, decides to move into his wife’s house after tying the knot? He has done that, folks. He now lives in the apartment of his better half, the drop-dead gorgeous Deepika Padukone. And why, you might ask?

Well, in an interview Ranveer S has said he does not want to move her from her ‘comfort zone’, adding she is his ‘first priority’. Well done, Ranveer S. Let’s see how long it takes Deepika P to make you part of her comfort zone.

The Date Issue

The Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer biopic of Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray is in the news for noncontroversial reasons, which is a bit surprising because the person on whose life the movie is made seldom had a moment in his life when he was not mired in controversy.

Here’s why: the film’s release date, Jan 25, is also the birthday of Balasaheb T. So many assumed that it (the coinciding of dates) was done deliberately. Nawazuddin S, however, dismisses that notion. He says both the film and the late politician do not need any sort of propaganda. Hmmm … if it’s not a propaganda story, then it must be a love tale about Balasaheb T and the non-Maharashtrans whose presence in Maharashtra he wasn’t particularly fond of.

Strangely Normal

Pop star Taylor Swift started going out with actor Joe Alwyn two years ago. Initially, the romance was successfully kept under wraps by both of them and the media didn’t get wind of it for a good six to seven months. Then, as they started to go out more and more together, it became apparent that they two were dating.

But now that Joe A’s become busier with his acting assignments — such as important parts that he played in the Golden Globes-nominated film The Favourite and Boy Erased — their togetherness has become a little less visible. It has prompted the media to call their relationship a ‘strangely private’ one. Joe A does not like it. He has told a magazine that he doesn’t believe it’s ‘strangely private’. “I think, it’s normal,” he claims. Normality is a subjective perspective, especially in anything connected with Taylor S, but obviously paparazzi think celebrities who don’t flaunt their personal lives are strange creatures.

Going Home

Last year, everybody felt super happy when it was announced that Hollywood heartthrob Julia Roberts had decided to do a regular role on television in the series called Homecoming. It happened and the series and Julia R even earned Golden Globes nominations for it early this month.

But news is that the actress has decided not to return as an actress (in the role of Heidi Bergman) in the second season of Homecoming. However, she will remain associated with the show as one of its executive producers. Man, these movie stars and their inflated egos! Perhaps had she won the Golden Globes, she’d still have been there.
